Karns City Junior / Senior High School students recently competed in the Academic Games Leagues of America (AGLOA) National Tournament in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations to the 2025 Karns City Senior High School Prom Court!
The Karns City Area School District is seeking a district resident to serve as an alternate on the Butler County Vocational-Technical School Authority Board (BCAVTS). The Authority Board meets one to two times per year and oversees the debt related to the BCAVTS's bond. The next meeting is May 1, 2025, at 6:30 PM at the BCAVTS. Interested candidates may submit a letter to the attention of the Superintendent, 1446 Kittanning Pike, Karns City, PA 16041 or email eritzert@kcasdk12.org by the end of the day on April 28, 2025.
First grade held their annual Egg Boxing Competition on April 15th. To compete, the students needed to create an egg license. Each student wrote a descriptive paragraph about their egg boxer, including their egg name and two special moves that could help them become the Egg Boxing Champ. The four winners were Humpty Dumpty, Eggslee, Fillbo, and Mighty America!

Mrs. Twentier and Mrs. Seidler’s social studies classes studied the history of everyone’s favorite Easter treat…marshmallow Peeps! Did you know these delicious treats are made in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania?
The fifth grade classes studied the history of the Peeps and then made dioramas of the Peeps in American History. The students really showed off their Peep-tastic creativeness!
The annual Elementary Spelling Bee was a great success!

The fifth grade classes at KCAES celebrated the NCAA Championship with a March Madness Game Day! At the beginning of the tournament, the students picked a team in the tournament to research. That team was also their pick to win the championship. The students enjoyed following their team throughout the tournament. The student with the winning team won a basketball!

Chloe Fritch, a student at Karns City High School, is making a significant impact in her community. Inspired by a visit to The Highmark Caring Place with her classmates in the fall, Chloe turned her compassion into action, rallying the community for a cause close to her heart. On January 19th, she organized a bingo fundraiser at the Chicora Moose as part of her National Honor Society project, raising an impressive $6,936 for The Highmark Caring Place. The organization later matched the funds, bringing the total donation to nearly $14,000.
Thanks to Chloe’s efforts and the generosity of event attendees, her fundraiser will provide vital support to children, adolescents, and families grieving the loss of a loved one. Well done, Chloe!
Twelve Karns City band students in grades 7-9 were selected to participate in PMEA junior high district band, which was cohosted by North Catholic Hight School and Karns City. The students, who were in two different ensemble levels, rehearsed with two guest conductors during the day and then performed a concert in the evening.
Congratulations to all of these outstanding student musicians!
Third grade students had a special visit from Lieutenant Brian Grooms and his K-9 partner, Chooch, from the Butler City Police Department.
Fifth grade students recently wrapped up their unit 5 social studies projects with an exciting showcase of Washington, D.C. sites. Each group researched a monument, memorial, museum, or landmark, diving into the history and importance of their chosen topic.

Sixteen students recently visited Slippery Rock University's music department for the culmination of the spring partnership with the music education program.
Mrs. Hammonds’ fourth grade students spent a couple weeks learning about different types of text and graphic features in ELA.
The students read various types of non-fiction books that provided opportunities for the students to identify features such as text feature that include fact boxes, captions, bold text, and table of contents to name a few. They also identified graphic features such as the difference between a photograph and illustration in a story, graphs, charts, and maps that help provide more information within a story.
To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. McCall, and Mrs. McMillen's third grade classes crafted with fifth graders while studying the colors of the rainbow (ROY G. BIV) that leads to the pot of gold! Mrs. Twentier and Mrs. Seidler's fifth grade classes assisted in making Pot of Gold necklaces with the third graders.

To prepare for the upcoming PSSAs, Mrs. Baum’s 4th/5th ELA class is reading the book, ‘Out of My Mind’ by Sharon Draper. The students' completed activities about the story relating to figurative language, vocabulary, and citing evidence from the text.
Mrs. Hebenthal's sixth grade students at JKarns City Elementary School celebrated Read Across America week with some special activities, including spending time with Mrs. Wimer's first grade class.
The older students read books and played theme related card games with the younger students. Although sixth grade visits first grade weekly, this was an extra special treat for all students involved.
Students at Karns City Area Elementary recently took on the Cereal Dominoes Challenge and collected 860 boxes of cereal for the Karns City Weekend Food Backpack Program.
The students were successful! Their cereal chain wound through the halls from kindergarten to 6th grade! Students cheered as the Domino chain fell from one end to the other, knocking down all of the boxes.
Students in Mrs. Kelly Sadowski and Ms. Carolyn Kelly’s classroom at Karns City Area Elementary School, opened the “Sunshine Station,"a coffee and snack shack for teachers. Teachers were given the opportunity to order a drink (with the choices of tea, iced coffee or water), creamer or no creamer, sugar or no sugar, and a snack (chips or biscotti), and students then filled each order and delivered it to the staff.
This month the station was focused on kindness, and each student wrote encouraging messages on the cups. Students then practiced using their social skills when delivering. Teachers told students that giving someone something can feel good and is a kind thing to do! Students enjoyed writing the uplifting notes, and seeing staff smile with each delivery.

The Karns City Area School District School Board of Directors will hold a special meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 in the LGI room of the Karns City Jr./Sr. High School, 1446 Kittanning Pike, Karns City, PA. for the purpose of discussing facilities needs and any other matters that come before the Board.
Mrs. Hammonds’ fourth grade students had a great day learning and reviewing ELA skills for the Super Bowl.
A lot of learning was had about the Super Bowl with close reading passages, grammar was practiced with editing a news media post, word building with compound words, and reviewing of skills with point of view, inference, and main idea.
KCAES fifth grade had a Super Bowl Tailgate Party on Friday afternoon. The party consisted of math and reading challenges, along with quarterback, punting, and jumping competitions.
The students learned the history of the Super Bowl and made predictions for this year's Super Bowl.
The fifth grade social studies classes recently participated in an activity based on the taxes forced on the colonists during the American Revolution.
Congratulations to the Karns City competitive cheer team on placing 4th in the "2A Large" Division at the PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships! This is the best Karns City has finished at the state championship competition in school history.
Karns City band students recently traveled to Slippery Rock University as the culmination of the fall partnership with the music department on campus.
In the partnership, KC students are paired with SRU music education majors to participate in four virtual lessons. After the lessons, the pairs meet on campus to have an in-person lesson. While on campus, the students also participate in various music activities and attend a concert by the SRU students.
Conrad Dunlap, trumpet, Owen Black, French horn, and Brayden Dinger, flute, joined students from more than 40 schools at PMEA District 5's District Band Festival, held at Mercer High School this past week. The event took place on January 23rd and 24th, culminating with a concert, conducted by Dr. William Stowman of Messiah University.

Mrs. Baum’s students at Karns City Area Elementary enjoyed a StarBOOKS Q2 Reward Day on January 24th! Complete with cake pops, white hot coco, and the pink drink! We love learning a LATTE!
Students at KCAES joined with Military Connections out of New Kensington to make valentines for service men and women.
Our fifth grade students demonstrated positive action, kindness and helping others by working with the third grade students to make the valentines.

Mrs. Twentier and Mrs. Seidler’s fifth grade classes really got into the Christmas spirit over the last few weeks!
They celebrated Santa Day, Reindeer Day, Ugly Sweater Day, and many more! They also made beautiful snowflakes on the Christmas Craft Day! They concluded the week with a pizza party provided by the PTO.

Our junior high students participated in the 12 Days of Kindness this month. It was a fun way to reward students for showing kindness toward others.
Each day students had a chance to earn a kindness ticket for helping others, being kind and going above and beyond. A winner was selected each day from the tickets that were turned in. As a reward, the winners got to watch a movie while enjoying a snack and hot chocolate.
Karns City Area Elementary School 5th grade students graduated from the DARE program in December.
The DARE program consists of ten lessons about making good decisions and the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The program was taught by Deputy McGrady from the Butler County Sheriff's Department.
A few select high school band students recently visited Karns City Area Elementary School and the Chicora Medical Center to play Christmas carols for the students and residents.
Four students represented Karns City at PMEA District 5 Honors Band! The festival concluded with a concert on Saturday afternoon. The students -- Brayden Dinger and Kira Cutway on flute, Conrad Dunlap on trumpet and Owen Black on French horn -- were each selected by audition on a collegiate level solo. Congratulations!
Many students, staff, parents, and alumni of Karns City enjoyed performing with the Kittanning Community Band for their winter concert series!
On November 21m students in grades 7-12 wore blue and participated in a few activities to show support for Children's Grief Awareness Day.
Representatives from The Highmark Caring Place visited Karns City several times over the last few months and facilitated lessons with all our students on how best to support your peers who are grieving.
It's hard to believe the winter season is just around the corner. As we prepare for the possibility of inclement weather this year, please take a moment to review our winter weather procedures.
