text feature surgery

Fourth grade students at Sugarcreek Elementary School recently participated in “text feature surgery.” The students spent a week and a half learning about various text, graphic features and nonfiction stories. They learned that text features include words such as captions, headings, bulleted, list, and titles. Students also learned the difference in a graphic feature is using pictures such as diagrams, charts, maps, and more.

This month, our 7th and 8th grade students took part in a 12 Days of Kindness Challenge. Every teacher was given 12 Golden Kindness Tickets for the month of December. Each day we randomly selected a ticket that was turned in for a prize. Our winners pictured below will be watching a movie and getting hot chocolate to show appreciation for their kindness to others.

SRU Field Trip

Karns City band students in grades 7-12 recently traveled to Slippery Rock University for a special activity.

Karns City students were taught by the SRU Music Education majors through asynchronous video throughout the semester. The partnership, now in its 9th year, was established in 2012 by Dr. Melago and Mrs. Amanda Walters as a way to provide more teaching experience to music education majors and 1:1 instruction to the students in the KC band.

important update

Dear Chicora Elementary Families,

We look forward to welcoming our elementary students back to school tomorrow morning.

At Chicora Elementary School, buses will enter from Kittanning Street from 8:10 AM until approximately 8:30 AM and drop students off at the left side of the school building. We ask that no cars enter the roadway during this time.

Parent drop-offs can begin at approximately 8:30 AM after the buses have arrived. Once you have dropped your child off, all vehicles will go around the back of the building and follow the road down to Spring Street to exit the campus.

We ask that you follow the time restrictions for the safety of the students.

Afternoon pick-up will occur at the side door after the buses depart the bus lane at approximately 3:30 PM. If you need to pick your child up during the school day, please send a note with your child or call the school in advance. You will pick your child up at the side door.

KCASD Update - Start of School for Elementary Students

During the summer, construction began on renovating and enlarging Chicora Elementary School. The project is progressing and work will continue throughout the school year. As we prepare for the start of the 2023-2024 school year, it has become necessary to delay the start of school for both our elementary schools by one week. The high school will start as scheduled, with the first student day on August 23, 2023 for secondary students. The new start day for the elementary students at both Chicora and Sugarcreek Elementary School will be August 30, 2023. The one-week delay for the elementary schools will permit contractors to complete items necessary to start the new school year.
