District Overview
The Karns City Area School District is a public school district spanning parts of Butler County, Armstrong County, and Clarion County in Western Pennsylvania. It is comprised of the boroughs of Chicora, East Brady, Fairview, Karns City, Petrolia, and Bruin, as well as the townships of Parker, Fairview, Donegal, Perry, Sugarcreek, Brady, and Brady’s Bend. The rural district encompasses approximately 130.3 square miles and is situated to the southwest of the Allegheny River along Pennsylvania Routes 268 and 68. The majority of the District is located within Butler County, however, the southeast corner is located in Armstrong County and East Brady Boro along with Brady Township in Clarion County. The City of Butler, the Butler County seat, is approximately 15 miles southwest of the District offices and the Junior Senior High School.
The Karns City Area Elementary School currently services the Karns City area community. The Karns City Junior-Senior High School completes the District with grades 7-12. According to 2020 federal census data, the District serves a resident population of 9,861, a net change of -875 persons from the 2010 federal census.
The stretch of the Allegheny River bordering the District is a major recreational waterway. Brady’s Bend invites boaters and swimmers to the region for three seasons every year. State Game Lands 105 and 164 are also located within the Karns City Area School District boundaries and provide important recreational opportunities.
